Register.com is one of the companies in the Web.com group. It has been in the market for over 15 years and although it offers a wide variety of products and services, it has built a name for itself as a domain registrar. It currently manages over two million domains. In 2010, it was taken over by Web.com, a large and reputed company in the web hosting and web design business. The Web.com group includes other companies providing similar services and the group has a client base of over a million customers. Register.com offers domain registration, email hosting, website design, building, maintenance and web hosting services. It also provides SSL certificates, SEO, e-commerce and online marketing services.

Register.com web hosting products and features

The Web.com group focuses not only on hosting, but also on end-to-end services, including web design, SEO and maintenance. As a result, Register.com provides two categories of hosting products. The first one is meant for people who want a site builder based web hosting solution and the second category is standard web hosting. Here are the plans:

1. Site builder based web hosting (Do-it-myself plan):

Customers can design and build websites using site builder and other tools. This plan, which costs $13/month, includes a free domain with an annual subscription. Users get 5 GB of web space, 20 GB/month of bandwidth and there is no limit on the number of pages. Only one email account is allowed, but the mailbox can store up to 10 GB. Customers have free access to over 10,000 website templates and stock images. Standard pre-written content is available for a number of businesses. Customers can use this as a starting point to build their own unique content.

Infrastructure, reliability, support and user experience

The location of the data centers and the kind of infrastructure available is unclear, but being a Web.com company, it is likely to compare well with other large hosting providers.

Register.com gives a 99.99% uptime guarantee for Unix hosting and 99.9% for Windows hosting. Credits are offered in case the reliability drops below the SLA and are designed to reassure customers about uptime. For downtimes of over one hour per month beyond the agreed SLA, the company compensates customers 12 times the actual downtime. Scheduled maintenance, third party software issues and a few other situations are excluded. Hence, customers are advised to read the fine-print carefully to verify the usefulness of the guarantee.

Register.com has excellent support channels. Telephone support is provided over both US and Canadian toll-free numbers. An international number is also available. Customers can request a call back, which is a rare option in the hosting industry. In addition to email based support, support over social media channels (Facebook and Twitter) is also available. There are a number of self-help options like guides, tutorials, tips, etc. Overall, the support system looks robust.

Register.com advantages

  • The company is a part of the reputed Web.com group and customers can expect the stability and reliability that comes with a large company.
  • The product range is wide and there are specialized offerings for e-commerce websites.
  • Managed web hosting is available, which makes it easy for people who don't want to get into the technical aspects of hosting.
  • Professional service is available for design, content, SEO and marketing, which are usually not provided by other companies.
  • There are multiple customer support channels and the majority of user feedback about support is positive.
  • Uptime guarantee with a generous credit system in case of downtime.

Register.com disadvantages

  • The company does not provide many options for those who want just plain simple hosting. For example, the shared hosting plan is a bit restrictive when compared to other hosts, but will be sufficient for most websites.
  • There is no money-back guarantee.
  • The prices for managed hosting and design options are slightly on the higher side, but promotional plans are available for new customers.

Overall Register.com review

If you are looking for a reliable company to take care of all aspects of your website, including design, content, maintenance, SEO and online marketing, Register.com is a great option. The company also provides a reliability guarantee and has a generous credit system in case of longer downtimes.

register.com is alright… the support could be a little better and the interface is horrible. I can’t really complain about the speed of the site.
